e1/e2 Diagram

Basis: EN 1999-1-1 bearing resistance for a single bolt treated as an end/edge bolt.
ULS shear e1 e2 ULS shear e4 e3

e1 is measured parallel to the load direction. e2 is measured perpendicular to the load direction.

Visible Limitations

  • This draft treats the checked bolt as a single end/edge bolt for facade-style one-bolt bearing checks.
  • Net-section resistance, bolt shear resistance, tension interaction, and full connection behaviour may still require separate checks.
  • Oversized and short slotted holes use 0.80 times the normal-hole bearing resistance. Long slotted holes use 0.65 times the normal-hole bearing resistance.
  • For countersunk bolts, bearing resistance is based on connected plate thickness minus half the countersink depth.
  • For slotted holes, EN 1999 limits αb to 0.66 and uses e1 = e3 + d/2 and e2 = e4 + d/2.
  • For short slotted holes, slot length should not exceed 1.5(d + 1 mm). For long slotted holes, slot length should not exceed 2.5(d + 1 mm).
  • For slotted holes, e3/e4 are clear distances to the slotted hole edge, not distances to the slot centreline.
  • Aluminium bolts should not be used in slotted holes unless a qualified engineer confirms the project basis.
This calculation is provided for preliminary guidance only. VitraLab does not certify or approve the final design. All structural designs must be reviewed and approved by a qualified engineer before manufacture, installation, or use.
